This seafood box is called Poiscaille, and I recently tried it out for several weeks! I'm sharing my experience in the following paragraphs, so you can decide whether it's worth it or not!

Poiscaille is a subscription service that allows you to collect boxes of seafood at a local pick-up point or have them delivered directly to your home, sourced from sustainable French fishing practices.

The shellfish, crustaceans, and fish from Poiscaille’s boxes are guaranteed to be ultra-fresh. This is incredibly convenient if you want to cook fish more often, try out new recipes, and enjoy quality produce.

👉 Additionally, thanks to an email sent to you the day before or the day before that, you have the opportunity to choose the contents of your box from a wide range of options on the Poiscaille website.

Is there a commitment with Poiscaille baskets?

Are the fish prepared?

The fish you receive from Poiscaille is most often entire, but gutted. This means they can be prepared easily: for every kilogram of whole fish, you can expect to get around 500g of edible flesh once the head, tail, bones, and entrails have been removed.

4 Things to Know Before Ordering Poiscaille 💬

The seafood products from Poiscaille are not farmed

Fish are caught in the sea, in the wild. They are not sourced from polluting farms. This means you can enjoy the authentic taste of traditionally caught seafood, featuring higher quality fish that are leaner.

Poiscaille fishing is 100% French and environmentally friendly

All the fishermen that Poiscaille collaborates with operate within 20 kilometres of the French coast. The fishing techniques employed are sustainable, using vessels no longer than 12 metres. They do not use trawlers or net-dragging methods, which are detrimental to biodiversity.

Poiscaille Provides a Dignified Life for Fishermen 🎣

Poiscaille ensures that it fairly compensates its partner fishermen, in order to preserve their work and expertise, enabling them to make a living from their trade.

These individuals are indeed at the helm of very small enterprises. There are no more than three fishermen on board their boat, and fishing trips are carried out on a day-long basis, in contrast to large trawlers that scour the oceans for several days at a time.

The products are fresh! 🧊

Poiscaille uses the delivery service Chronofresh and operates without intermediaries, to minimise the time between when the traps are fished and when they arrive at your home.

The maximum is 72 hours, ensuring that you receive goods that are extremely fresh. Personally, I have never found anything this fresh in traditional retail, and you can genuinely taste the difference.

You choose what you order

When you first subscribe, you can already specify your allergies and intolerances.

Then, between 7pm and 11pm on the evening before or the day before your delivery (within your region), you will receive an email inviting you to visit your Poiscaille customer account to select the contents of your next box. You can therefore decide whether you prefer fish, shellfish, or molluscs, and specify which species of each you would like.

👉 This is also the moment when you can add some extras to your order. These are additional products to your locker, which will be charged along with it. For instance, you might find items like mussels, lobster, and more.

The cost of your Poiscaille subscription is determined by how often you receive it and the number of boxes you reserve. A weekly Poiscaille box costs £19.90.

What are the shipping costs to expect with Poiscaille? 🚚

Poiscaille collaborates with volunteer collection points: as such, delivery to a collection point is included in the price of your box and is therefore free.

If you prefer to have it delivered to your home, you will need to pay £14.90 for delivery per crate, which covers the costs associated with the specialised Chronofresh delivery service.

For me, it's a big yes!

The difference compared to what you find in supermarkets is undeniable. The flavours are much more pronounced, and the cooked recipes are delicious.

This subscription also allows you to discover new ways of cooking, prepare a lovely meal when hosting friends, or simply to rediscover the joy of eating seafood. The flexibility of the subscription truly enables you to order whenever you like, which is very convenient.

The French origins, fair payment for fishermen, and sustainable fishing are truly what encouraged me to try Poiscaille, and I was not disappointed in this respect either.

One small thing to improve at Poiscaille?

Very pleased with Poiscaille, I wanted to gift a subscription to my sister for Christmas. However, she does not have a collection point near her home, which makes things a bit more complicated.

The issue is the same for the Christmas shop, which does not allow orders to be placed on the website for collection at pick-up points outside the Paris region. It's a shame, as given the cost of home delivery (£14.90), I chose to refrain from ordering for this occasion.
