My Opinion on POISCAILLE, the 100% Fish Delivery Box 🐟

You're probably familiar with the idea of buying fruit and vegetable baskets from local producers, which you can pick up near your home. Well, now there are also fish, shellfish, crustaceans, and oysters available, sourced from local fishing!

This seafood box is called Poiscaille, and I've been trying it out for the past few weeks! I’m sharing my experience in the following lines, so you can decide if it's worth it or not!

How does Poiscaille work?

Poiscaille is a subscription service that allows you to collect or receive at home boxes of seafood sourced from sustainable French fishing.

The shellfish, crustaceans, and fish from Poiscaille's boxes are guaranteed to be super fresh. This is really handy if you want to cook fish more often, try out new recipes, and enjoy quality products.

Is there a commitment with Poiscaille baskets?

Are the fish prepared?

The fish you receive from Poiscaille are most often whole, but gutted. This means they can then be prepared: for every kilogram of whole fish, you'll get around 500g of edible flesh once the head, tail, bones, and entrails are removed.

Fish are caught from the wild in the sea. They come from sustainable sources, not from polluting farms. As a result, you get the authentic taste of traditionally caught fish, which are of higher quality and less fatty.

All the fishermen that Poiscaille works with operate within 20 kilometres of the French coast. The fishing techniques they use help to protect the oceans, employing vessels no longer than 12 metres. They do not use trawls or dredging nets, which can severely impact biodiversity.

Poiscaille provides a decent living for fishermen 🎣

Poiscaille is committed to fairly compensating its partner fishers to ensure they can preserve their work and expertise, allowing them to make a living from their craft.

These individuals are indeed leading small businesses. There are no more than three fishermen on board their boats, and fishing trips are day trips, as opposed to large trawlers that scour the oceans for several days at a time.

The products are fresh! 🧊

Poiscaille uses the courier service Chronofresh and works directly with them, to minimise the time between catching the seafood and when it arrives at your door.

The maximum is 72 hours, which ensures that the goods are extremely fresh. Personally, I've never found anything this fresh in traditional retail, and you can really taste the difference.

You choose what you order

When you sign up for the first time, you can already specify your allergies and intolerances.

Then, between 7 PM and 11 PM the day before or the day before that (in the region) of your delivery, you'll receive an email inviting you to visit your Poiscaille customer account to choose the contents of your next box. This means you can decide if you prefer fish, shellfish, or seafood, and which specific types of each.

What is the price of Poiscaille's sea lockers?💰

The cost of your Poiscaille subscription is based on how often you receive it and the number of boxes you reserve. A weekly Poiscaille box costs €19.90.

What shipping costs should you expect with Poiscaille? 🚚

Poiscaille collaborates with volunteer drop-off points: as such, the delivery to a drop-off point is included in the price of your box and is therefore free.

👉 To check where the nearest pick-up point is located from your home, simply head to the map at the bottom of the "Subscribe" page on the Poiscaille website.

If you prefer to have it delivered to your home, you will need to pay €14.90 in delivery charges per box, which covers the costs associated with the specialised Chronofresh delivery service.

For me, it's a big yes!

The difference from what you might find in a supermarket is undeniable. The flavours are much more pronounced, and the prepared dishes are delicious.

This subscription allows you to discover new ways to cook, prepare a lovely meal when entertaining, or simply to rediscover the joy of eating seafood. The flexibility of the subscription really lets you order whenever you like, which is very convenient.

The French origin, fair compensation for fishermen, and sustainable fishing are what truly encouraged me to give Poiscaille a go, and I wasn't disappointed in that regard either.

Is there one small thing that could be improved at Poiscaille?

I'm really pleased with Poiscaille, so I wanted to get my sister a subscription for Christmas. However, she doesn't have a collection point near her, which makes things a bit more complicated.

The issue is the same for the Christmas shop, which doesn't allow ordering on the site for collection at pick-up points outside the Paris region. It's a shame, because given the cost of home delivery (€14.90), I decided against placing an order for this occasion.
