You are probably familiar with the concept of fruit and vegetable boxes from local producers that you can pick up near your home. Well, you should know that there are now options for fish, shellfish, crustaceans, and oysters sourced from local fishing!

This seafood box is called Poiscaille, and I recently tested it over several weeks! I'm sharing my experience in the following lines, so you can decide if it's worth it or not!

Poiscaille is a subscription service that lets you collect seafood boxes from a collection point or have them delivered to your home, featuring products sourced from sustainable French fisheries.

The shellfish, crustaceans, and fish from Poiscaille’s boxes are guaranteed fresh. This is really convenient if you want to cook fish more often, try out new recipes, and enjoy quality products.

👉 Additionally, thanks to an email sent to you the day before or the day before that, you have the option to choose the contents of your box from a wide range of options on the Poiscaille website.

Is there a commitment with Poiscaille baskets?

Poiscaille is no strings attached! You can suspend your subscription at any time or change the frequency. You have the option of:

• Every fortnight,

You can change your pickup point at any time, as long as the order hasn't been dispatched yet.

What amount does a Poiscaille box contain?

Are the fish prepared?

The fish you receive with Poiscaille are usually whole, but gutted. This means they can be prepared easily: for every kilogram of whole fish, you get around 500g of edible flesh once the head, tail, bones, and entrails have been removed.

All the fishermen working with Poiscaille operate within 20 kilometres of the French coast. The fishing techniques used help to protect the oceans, using vessels no longer than 12 metres. They do not use trawls or net-dragging techniques, which are devastating to biodiversity.

Poiscaille provides a dignified life for fishermen 🎣

Poiscaille ensures that it compensates its partner fishermen fairly to preserve their work and expertise, allowing them to make a living from their trade.

These individuals are indeed at the helm of small businesses. There are no more than three fishermen on board their boat, and the fishing trips are done on a daily basis, unlike the large trawlers that scour the oceans for several days at a time.

The products are fresh! 🧊

Poiscaille partners with the courier service Chronofresh and works directly to minimise the time between when the catches are harvested and when they arrive at your doorstep.

The maximum is 72 hours, which ensures that your goods are incredibly fresh. Personally, I have never found anything this fresh in traditional retail, and you can really taste the difference.

You choose what you order

When you first sign up, you can already indicate your allergies and intolerances.

Then, between 7 PM and 11 PM the evening before or the day before (in your area) of your delivery, you will receive an email inviting you to log into your Poiscaille customer account to choose the contents of your next box. You can decide if you prefer fish, shellfish, and what types of each you'd like.

What is the price of Poiscaille's sea locker?💰

The cost of your Poiscaille subscription is determined by how often you subscribe and the number of crates you reserve. A weekly Poiscaille crate costs R19.90.

What are the shipping costs to expect with Poiscaille? 🚚

Poiscaille works with volunteer collection points: as such, delivery to a collection point is included in the price of your box and is therefore free.

If you prefer to have it delivered to your home, you will need to pay R14.90 in delivery fees per box, which covers the costs associated with specialized chronofresh delivery.

A little something for Poiscaille to improve?

Very happy with Poiscaille, I wanted to subscribe my sister for Christmas. However, she doesn't have a collection point nearby, which makes it a bit complicated.

The problem is the same for the Christmas store, which does not allow orders to be made on the site for collection at pickup points outside the Paris area. It's a pity, as considering the cost of home delivery (R300), I preferred to refrain from placing an order for this occasion.
