What is the winter bohemian look?
Often regarded as a summer trend, the bohemian style can actually be adapted for all seasons. Of course, when it’s chilly, you can't just rely on a light dress and sandals. During those times of the year when the weather is unpredictable, you can absolutely embrace the bohemian look by layering multiple pieces of clothing, sometimes letting certain layers peek through, and playing with the various fabrics and patterns.
Additionally, the boho trend embraces natural materials: cotton, linen, leather, as well as wool, for instance, which has excellent insulating properties—perfect for winter.
In summary, dressing bohemian in winter gives you even more opportunities to mix and match your clothing and wear a style that reflects who you are.
Dare to try a monochrome look with different textures
Are you a fan of bohemian fashion? If so, you probably know all about prints and patterns! However, in winter, this trend can also be embraced with a monochromatic style by choosing clothing with unique textures or intricate embroidery.
Don’t hesitate to mix dresses with jackets you might not normally pair them with by playing with contrasts. Velvet or leather, for example, often highlight softer and more luminous fabrics.
👉 Winter is also the season for cool colours like blue, grey, mauve, and green. It’s the perfect time to incorporate these into your bohemian wardrobe by playing with gradients!
The cardigan or chunky knit jumper: the essential bohemian piece for winter
Worried about feeling cold in just a long dress? Know that knitwear and cardigans add a cosy touch to your bohemian look. To stay on trend and warm, I recommend choosing styles that are quite long and thick, with chunky knits.
It’s often believed that loose clothing tends to make us look bulkier and wider. This isn’t true! In fact, the opposite happens. Wearing loose and long outfits, your figure will appear slimmer and taller.
Furthermore, by feeling comfortable in your clothing, you'll come across as a naturally spontaneous person who is confident in themselves. 😉

Keep Your Legs Warm with Knee-High or Thigh-High Boots
Even if you choose to wear thick tights, they’re not always enough to keep you warm when wearing a dress. To increase the amount of your body covered by clothing, you can also opt for boots, or even better, thigh-highs. These tall shoes will cover a large portion of your legs while giving you a very feminine look. They will enhance both a short dress and a long dress!
👉 If you're looking to lengthen and slim your silhouette, I'd recommend opting for heeled boots. However, flat soles will also work perfectly if you can't wear heels or if you need comfortable shoes for daily wear, such as for work.
Fringes: The Boho Chic Detail for Winter
As you probably already know, the bohemian style is characterised by many creative and unique details. This can include embroidered natural and colourful patterns, as well as beads. These little touches of personalisation are a way to make your clothing your own and to showcase, through them, the person you are.
So, it was the hippies in the 1970s who started to reinvent everyday clothing in this way to express their individuality and beliefs. The “peace and love” symbol, for instance, is one of their recurring motifs!
By drawing inspiration from Native American customs and reviving them, the hippies have brought fringes back into fashion, which can be seen in today's bohemian style. This season, they have even made their way onto the runways, as seen at Prada, Boss, and Christian Dior!
Now is the perfect time to embrace fringing in your wardrobe, whether it's to complement a dress or any other bohemian outfit, adding your personal touch:
- a fringed jacket,
- a pair of fringed ankle boots,
- a bag featuring similar detailing...
Embrace Accessories to Express Your Bohemian Spirit!
Wondering how to accessorise your bohemian dress? If you enjoy this trend, it's likely that you also love wearing lots of accessories to make your look unique.
However, I often notice that during winter, it’s less common to wear accessories. Sometimes this can be for practical reasons: large rings, for instance, often get caught in clothes when putting them on… which happens quite a few times a day in winter. Just like with clothing, I recommend that you combine smaller accessories and focus on pieces that are suitable for the season, such as those I’m about to share with you in the following lines.
The Hat
To look stylish, nothing beats choosing a lovely hat that will elevate your winter bohemian dress! I recommend that to keep in line with the boho style, you opt for natural colours, from light camel brown to dark chocolate, selecting your headwear to match the rest of your outfit.
👉 To stay even warmer, team your hat with a chunky oversized scarf. 😉
The small leather bag
Super convenient for everyday use, this little leather bag will become your best friend when wearing a long bohemian dress! In winter, it’s often necessary to keep various little items close at hand, such as lip balm, hand cream, your gloves, your phone, and more.
Since your dress doesn't have pockets, a small bag will be perfect to keep everything organised and easily accessible. As mentioned earlier, you can choose it in a boho style, with fringes, embroidery, or beads…
