What is the winter bohemian look?

Often seen as a summer trend, bohemian style can actually be adapted for all seasons. Of course, when the weather turns cold, you can’t just rely on a light dress and sandals. During those times of the year when the weather is unpredictable, you can definitely embrace a bohemian look by layering multiple pieces of clothing, sometimes allowing different layers to peek through, and playing around with various fabrics and patterns.

Additionally, the boho trend really embraces natural materials: cotton, linen, leather, and also wool, for example, which has excellent insulating properties, perfect for winter.

In summary, dressing boho in winter offers even more opportunities to mix and match your clothing, allowing you to showcase a style that truly reflects you.

Dare to try a monochrome look with different textures

Are you a fan of bohemian fashion? If so, you probably know all about prints and patterns! However, during winter, this trend can also be embraced with a monochromatic style by opting for clothing with unique textures or delightful embroidery.

Feel free to pair dresses with jackets that you might not normally associate, by playing with contrasts. Fabrics like velvet or leather, for instance, often highlight smoother and more lustrous fabrics.

👉 Winter is also the season for cool colours like blue, grey, mauve, and green. It’s the perfect time to incorporate them into your bohemian wardrobe by experimenting with gradients!

The Cardigan or Chunky Knit Jumper: The Must-Have Bohemian Piece for Winter

Worried about feeling cold in a simple maxi dress? Rest assured, jumpers and cardigans can add a cosy touch to your bohemian look. To stay on trend and keep warm, I recommend opting for styles that are quite long and thick, featuring chunky knits.

We often think that loose clothing can make us look bulkier and wider. This is not the case! In fact, the opposite is true. With oversized and longer garments, your silhouette will appear slimmer and more elongated.

Furthermore, when you feel comfortable in your clothes, you’ll come across as someone who is natural and spontaneous, exuding confidence. 😉

Keep Your Legs Warm with Knee-High or Thigh-High Boots

Even if you choose thick ones, tights are not always enough to keep you warm when wearing a dress. To increase the amount of your body covered by clothing, you can also opt for boots, or better yet, thigh-highs. These very high shoes will cover a large portion of your legs while giving you a very feminine look. They will elevate both a short dress and a long dress!

👉 If you're looking to elongate and slim your silhouette, I recommend opting for heeled boots. However, flat soles will also work perfectly if you're unable to wear heels or if you need comfortable shoes for daily wear, such as for work.

Fringes: the Winter Boho Chic Detail

As you probably already know, the bohemian style is defined by a variety of creative and original details. This can particularly include embroidered natural and colourful patterns, or even beads. These small touches of personalisation are a way to make your clothing your own and to express, through them, the person you truly are.

So, it was the hippies back in the 70s who began to reinvent everyday clothing in this way, to express their individuality and beliefs. The "peace and love" symbol, for instance, is one of their recurring motifs!

Taking inspiration from the customs of Native Americans and reviving them, the hippies also brought fringes back into fashion, which can be seen in today’s bohemian style. They’ve even made their way onto the runways this season, as seen at Prada, Boss, and Christian Dior!

Now is the perfect time to incorporate fringing into your wardrobe to complement a dress or any other bohemian outfit, pairing it in whichever way you choose:

  • a fringed jacket,
  • some fringe ankle boots,
  • a bag with this type of detailing…

Embrace Accessories to Showcase Your Bohemian Spirit!

Wondering how to accessorise your bohemian dress? If you love this trend, it's likely that you also enjoy wearing plenty of accessories to make your look unique.

However, I often notice that in winter, it's less common to wear accessories. Sometimes, this can be for practical reasons: large rings, for example, often get caught in your clothes when you put them on... which happens many times a day during winter. As with clothing, I recommend that you combine smaller accessories and opt for pieces that suit the season, such as those I’ll introduce to you in the following lines.

The Hat

To look stylish, nothing beats choosing a beautiful hat that will enhance your winter bohemian dress! I recommend opting for natural colours, from light camel brown to dark brown, and selecting your headwear to match the rest of your outfit.

👉 To keep even warmer, pair your hat with a large oversized knitted scarf. 😉

The Little Leather Bag

Super convenient for everyday use, the little leather bag will be your best mate if you’re wearing a long bohemian dress! In winter, it’s often essential to have plenty of little items on you, such as lip balm, hand cream, your gloves, your phone, and so on.

In the absence of pockets on your dress, a small bag will be perfect for keeping all your essentials organised and easily accessible. As mentioned earlier, you could opt for a boho style bag, featuring fringes, embroidery, or beads…
