My Thoughts on AQUARELLE, the Tailored Flower Subscription Box

In the past, to send flowers, you had to visit an Interflora florist. However, things have become much more convenient, and now you can do everything online!

A few months ago, for Mother's Day, I wanted to give my mum a floral subscription: I turned to Aquarelle for this service. Let me share the details of whether the outcome was up to my expectations.

What is the Aquarelle Flower Subscription?

👍 I loved it

  • The beauty of the bouquets,
  • The attractive pricing,
  • The option to order without commitment rather than paying everything upfront,
  • The eco-friendly approach of Aquarelle (Kraft packaging, flowers from France, ...)

What I Liked Less

  • No option to choose the flowers or the colour of the ordered bouquets,
  • Unable to add a small gift to your order,
  • The bouquets are not made by a local florist and are sent by courier.

How does the Aquarelle flower subscription work?

Because most people enjoy receiving flowers, the Aquarelle flower subscription is a fantastic way to add a touch of nature and vibrant colours to your home.

With this subscription, the recipient (which could be yourself) receives a regular surprise bouquet delivered to their chosen address. This can even be at a workplace, to brighten up a reception desk or lobby, for example.

What are the possible options for bouquets?

Unlike the bouquet designs available on the website, the bouquets from the subscriptions are created without a predefined pattern, based on:

  • The arrival of seasonal French flowers at the workshop,
  • the florist's inspiration and style.

Aquarelle offers you two different sizes of bouquets:

Watercolour flower bouquet

👉 A 35 cm bouquet typically contains around 15 small to medium-sized roses or seasonal flowers. For the 40 cm size, it usually features about 20 flowers.

Bouquet diameter 35 cm

What is the subscription frequency?

Aquarelle offers three delivery options:

  • Once a month,
  • Twice a month,
  • Four times a month.

👉 When you sign up, you need to choose the date for your first delivery. The bouquets will arrive between 8am and 2pm, excluding public holidays. If you choose a Saturday, future deliveries will also be made on that same day: you'll also have the option to check the delivery schedule from your customer account.

Who Creates the Bouquets?

The bouquets are crafted by Aquarelle florists, who operate from a workshop located in France, in Oise. The delivery of the bouquets is then managed:

  • by bike if you live in Paris,
  • or by a traditional courier if you live elsewhere.

Which flowers will be included in the Aquarelle bouquets?

In subscription plans, we feature seasonal flowers sourced from France. This means that during winter, you're more likely to receive flowers like tulips, ranunculus, and anemones... and you'll have to wait until May to enjoy a beautiful bouquet of peonies!

You can't choose the colour of your bouquet, but by opting for Aquarelle, you're supporting the New Zealand economy and ensuring the fair compensation of local flower growers. Choosing an Aquarelle subscription is also a commitment to the planet by avoiding air freight imports of flowers and excessive packaging.

Is there a no-obligation offer with Aquarelle?

Absolutely, and this is particularly something that sets the brand apart from some of its competitors. For me, this aspect was crucial. If you choose the "no commitment" option, the price of the bouquet, which is $39, will be automatically charged with each delivery.

🤑 Aquarelle rewards your loyalty: for every 11 bouquets, you'll receive one bouquet for free!

Who are Aquarelle flower subscriptions for?

The Aquarelle flower box, with its versatile design, is perfect for giving a gift. The no-obligation offer allows you to send a bouquet at regular intervals, while still providing the flexibility to cancel at any time.

If you want to sign up for regular flower deliveries over an extended period, Aquarelle is the way to go because their prices are more competitive at this level compared to Interflora, for instance.

Finally, Aquarelle is a perfect floral subscription for those who care about the environment and want to make a responsible purchase. Whether it's the packaging or the flowers grown in New Zealand, the brand focuses on this aspect and allows you to gift flowers or brighten up your home while staying true to your values.

What is the price of the Aquarelle flower subscription?

Aquarelle doesn't list its prices in a table on its website. To access this information, you need to use their subscription tool. To help you navigate and compare the offers, I have therefore summarised Aquarelle's floral subscription prices in two tables.

👉 All of these prices include delivery fees. They remain the same whether you purchase a gift card for a subscription or the subscription itself.

🔸 Watercolour Flower Prices - 35 Centimetre Bouquet

1 month (no commitment)3 months6 months1 year
1 bouquet/month$39 (per month)$117$222.30$421.20
2 bouquets/month$78 (per month)$222.30$421.20$842.40
4 bouquets/month$156 (per month)$421.20$842.40$1,684.80

🔸 Watercolour Prices - 40 Centimetre Bouquet

1 month (no contract)3 months6 months1 year

4 bouquets /month$316 (per month)$859.20$1,718.40$3,436.80

👉 Even if you order 4 bouquets each month for a year, you need to pay in full when you place your order. Here are my two tips for easy payment options:

  • Pay with Paypal and use the 4 payments with no fees service offered by Paypal,
  • Subscribe with no commitment to be charged NZD 39 each time a bouquet is sent.

What does a Watercolour flower bouquet look like?

For my part, I was pleased with the bouquets I had sent to my mum through Aquarelle. I managed to see some of them in person and received photos of the others, and I appreciated the variety of flower types that made up the arrangements and the colour harmony created by the florist.

Compared to what you might find at a florist for the same price, I think that the size of the watercolour bouquets is quite pleasing. The bouquets are well packaged and have always arrived in good condition.

On the flip side, I was able to include a little note with my first order, which was attached to the bouquet as a card. It’s really lovely!

Discover the Aquarelle Gift Card for Sending Flower Bouquets

Instead of directly signing up for a subscription on behalf of someone, Aquarelle gives you the option to give an e-gift card. This allows the recipient of the bouquet to set up a subscription directly on the Aquarelle website.

Aquarelle Gift Card

Who should you give Aquarelle flower bouquets to?

Flowers bring joy to most people! Whether it's to say thank you, offer congratulations, or celebrate a beautiful moment in life (such as a birth, wedding, birthday, or graduation...), a flower subscription can be a wonderful surprise that delights the recipient and provides enjoyment over time.

How to Give an Aquarelle Gift Card?

Simply head over to the “subscription” section of the website and choose “e-gift card”. You then select the duration and frequency of the subscription, enter your message, and proceed to payment. Once payment is completed, Aquarelle will send you a code via email that you can give to the gift recipient.

Watercolour Flower Order

What are the benefits of this system? 💚

  • The gift can be given right away and will remain a surprise,
  • The recipient can select their own date for the first delivery,
  • You don't need to know the recipient's contact details to gift them your present.

What is the main downside of this gift card? ❌

This type of subscription does not provide access to the no-commitment offer, which allows you to pay for bouquets as they are sent and to cancel whenever you like. The minimum order is therefore one bouquet per month for three months.

👉 This is the main reason why I chose to sign up directly instead of using the gift card.

My verdict on Interflora's flower subscription

After three months of my Aquarelle subscription, I'm ready to share my initial thoughts.

🔹 Regarding the registration on the site, it was very simple and I could easily find what I was looking for. I didn't use the gift card system, as I wanted a no-commitment subscription to send bouquets to my mum for a few months.

🔹 Regarding the bouquets, the result was really lovely and met my expectations. My mum was thrilled with the surprise and appreciated the little note that came with it. I would have liked to add a small gift to my order, like chocolates or a candle, as I noticed that Aquarelle has its own collection of candles. It's a pity that this isn't possible...

🔹 Of course, I would have preferred to use a florist close to my mother's place, but I really wanted bouquets made with flowers from France, and that just wasn't possible. Aquarelle was therefore the best compromise to meet that request, while ensuring that the bouquet was made by "real" florists.

Watercolour flowers from France

🔹 Before choosing Aquarelle, I took a look at what else was available. Compared to the competition, Aquarelle Flowers becomes really appealing when ordering or having bouquets delivered regularly or over a long period. The no-commitment offer isn’t available with Interflora, which is quite handy, and I'm thrilled that there is a free bouquet for every 11 bouquets ordered.

My experience with Aquarelle's floral subscription was positive for both me and the recipient of the bouquets! There were no delays, and the arrangements were stunning, although I would have appreciated more options for personalisation.

What flowers to give for a birthday?

For a woman's birthday, you could give her a lovely bouquet of seasonal flowers or roses. Red roses are quite romantic, while flowers in pastel shades are more suitable if you want to express your affection.

For a man's birthday, I recommend opting for a green or flowering plant. It's a classic choice that appeals to many!
