The Long Dress: A Seasonal Staple
The long dress, a key piece in our summer wardrobe, is perfect for everyday wear and can be worn both at the beach and for elegant evenings out. Light, flowing, colourful, whether plain or patterned, it flatters all body types and enhances your silhouette.
Whether it's an empire waist, long-sleeved shirt style, with thin straps, or a wrap style with puffed sleeves, we continue to wear it in autumn and bring it out again in spring, paired with a seasonal jacket.
What if we just left it out and wore it all year round? We’ll share everything you need to know about wearing your maxi dress, even during the winter months.
Which Long Dress to Choose for Winter?
While a long dress can be worn all year round, not all of them are suitable for it.
Avoid white dresses or very light colours, as they are too closely associated with summer. Opt for darker colours that are easy to mix and match with other shades.
Bohemian-style dresses with floral patterns and vibrant prints are perfect for this. However, it’s best to steer clear of split dresses, as they’re not really practical in winter.
Choose your dress based on its quality fabric, and steer clear of dresses that wrinkle easily. While they may look lovely, they can turn into a real hassle for anyone wanting to sit down during the day...
How to Properly Coordinate Your Outfit to Tackle the Winter Chill?
When it’s cold, you tend to want to snuggle up in warm clothing rather than put on a dress.
But with a long dress that has the great advantage of covering the legs, you can enjoy wearing a dress again, even during the winter months.
Here are some ideas for styling your long dress tastefully in winter, so you can look fabulous without having a dripping nose!
Wear a long coat, a blazer, or a leather jacket
With a long dress, you can confidently wear a masculine coat or an oversized blazer, which highlights your figure, especially if you have a defined waist.
Alternatively, if the weather allows, a leather biker jacket for a rock look.
If your dress has a pattern, choose a plain coat or jacket.
If your dress is a solid colour, you can pair it with a checked tweed blazer for a stylish and unique look.
Pair your maxi dress with a chunky knit sweater or long cardigan
Perfect with a retro dress featuring a bohemian vibe, it's paired with a long chunky knit cardigan.
Alternatively, you can wear your long dress with a jumper, treating it like a maxi skirt. If you have a dress with a defined waist, consider trying a cropped jumper for a more stylish look.
For colours, we stick to basic shades that are easy to match, such as beige, brown, black, or grey.
Wear Thick Tights
Having a trendy and stylish look every day is a must! However, there's no way I'm putting up with the cold.
So, under your dress, you can take advantage of warm, thick tights, which will be barely noticeable.
There are many plain models, some of which are referred to as polar. These are very warm, with a layer of fleece on the inside, providing excellent comfort even in extremely cold conditions.
You can also choose a thick legging if you prefer this type of style.
Wear boots or ankle boots
When it comes to footwear, wear your long dress with your favourite boots or ankle boots.
In leather, suede, camel, or black, experiment with different materials and colours.
Camel-coloured ankle boots give a bohemian look, best complemented with a fringed bag or a headband.
Biker-style boots bring a rebellious vibe that pairs perfectly with a leather jacket.
Long dresses particularly suit square heels, so it's best to avoid stilettos. And don't forget to match the colour of your handbag with your shoes.
Play with Ethnic Accessories
To add a bit of flair to your outfit, elevate your look with a touch of poetry through ethnic pendants and statement earrings.
Next, cinch your waist with a belt over a denim shirt, and add a patterned scarf to accentuate your neck and shoulders.
Grab your beanies, gloves, mittens, and scarves for winter
Embrace winter by mixing and matching accessories to stay warm, such as a matching beanie and gloves set.
We typically prefer them to be solid colours, but with a bold knit pattern.
Opt for subtle details like a knitted flower or a shiny thread.
Add a scarf to keep warm, or a snood. And for those who want a bohemian look even in winter, consider wearing mittens!
